Support the call for #KienasLaw |

Please sign the petition to support Commissioner Grunshaw's call for Kiena's Law in memory of Kiena Dawes. Kiena was a young mother from Lancashire who tragically took her own life in July 2022 after suffering prolonged domestic abuse. Kiena's death drew widespread attention as it highlighted the devastating and long-term effects domestic abuse can have, and raised questions about whether more could have been done to protect her. Last Friday, Commissioner Grunshaw hosted an event in Blackpool in Kiena's memory, focused on improving recognition, response and justice in cases of domestic abuse-related suicide, while calling for the introduction of Kiena's Law. Alongside the event, a powerful Blue Shoes exhibition was displayed in St John's Square. This visual installation represents lives lost to domestic abuse-related suicide, helping to highlight the human impact behind the issue. The colour blue symbolises both feelings of depression, “feeling blue”, and the lasting impact of lives lost. The event and call for change follow increasing national attention on domestic abuse-related suicide, with 150 suspected suicides linked to domestic abuse in 2025. However, current legislation does not consistently recognise where prolonged abuse, including coercive and controlling behaviour, has been a contributing factor in a victim's death. Please sign the petition at change.org/kienas-law to support the call for change. You can find further information about the event and exhibition on our website.
